Like any job at the start you tend to spend all of your time trying to learn as much as you can, make resources for the classroom and prove yourself to all of your colleagues. At the end of Term 1 you are exhausted and realise that you haven’t really spent a lot of time with the people you actually like, your friends!
Here are 3 ways to make sure that you spend time with these people. This is crucial in your journey to finding balance between work and having a life.
1. Schedule at least 2 hours on a particular day each week.
For me that is on Thursday nights from 7.30-9.30pm I meet up with a great group of girls for coffee. This is great because we all schedule that time each week and we know it is going to happen. If you don’t schedule it’s not going to happen!
2. Schedule a day each month to just spend with friends/family
For me this happens on a Sunday each month. I organise the whole day to spend with different friends or with family. I love going to the beach for a BBQ so that is usually what I book in. In order to see everyone I love hanging out with I usually invite a heap of people. Not everyone comes but it is always a great day.
3. Go to a larger social event each term
This is the best way to actually expand your social circle. I always go with an existing friend and make it a fun night out. We get to hand out and meet some new people. I absolutely love Salsa dancing so I usually organise to go with a friend to a big dance event. Great fun and sneak in some exercise too!
Now, you don’t have to be as structured as me but it is a great idea to have a little bit of structure. A very wise business woman once said ‘If it’s not schedule, it’s not real’. This is so true! Start putting these things into your schedule and after a while it will become habit.
