This year has been an amazing year for my family and I. I have found a real appreciation for everything that we have and I have been putting in place boundaries and strategies to protect what matters most to me, time with my family. My husband and I love to have long conversations about different things that we have read or heard (mostly I talk and he listens!). The latest thing we have been discussing is what makes one person fit, health and happy? Why can one family have great finances, time with their family AND great health? What are they doing differently? I then looked over our lives and analysed what we have been doing differently since we have been on our health journey, I also looked at people I knew and finally researched what others had done.
I have summarised them into 5 Habits of Healthy People but you could say they are 5 habits of happy people, 5 habits of successful people, it doesn’t really matter.
1. They are honest
The first habits is that healthy people are honest with others but most importantly they are honest with themselves. They are honest with themselves when they are eating too much, not getting off the couch enough, partying too much or committing to too many things that don’t contribute to a healthy life. They don’t ignore these behaviours. This habit may sound simple but it involves you being completely true to yourself and then taking the step to shift things in a positive way to help you head towards your health goals rather than the other way.
2. They love themselves
The second habit is that healthy people truly love themselves. They are not conceited in any way, they truly love and respect their bodies in a way that motivates them to take care of themselves. The love themselves enough to go to bed early so their body gets enough sleep. They love themselves enough to prepare nourishing foods for their body so that it has quality fuel to keep them going. They love themselves so much that they put themselves first when other commits come flooding in and try and take away their gym session, their meditation session or relaxation time. They respect their bodies in a way that they provide the right environment to be the very best that they can be.
The third habit is that healthy people turn it off. They turn off their iPads, laptops, phones and other gadgets to allow themselves time to truly be with the people around them, be alone in their thoughts or to focus on the task at hand. Healthy people have learnt that multi-tasking does not lead to a more productive day but rather increases stress and stops you from being in the moment. Leave your phone in a basket when you walk in and only use it to answer calls. Keep your phone in the car when you go and meet family or friends for dinner. Keep all of your gadgets in the office so when you are playing with your children you are truly giving them your attention. This habit can change your life by allowing you to truly be in each moment.
4. They swim against the current
The fourth habit is that healthy people go against what everyone else is doing. This might sound a little odd but the simple fact of opening up to the possibility of doing things differently to everyone else encourages you to really think about what you are doing. It could be for any part of your life; starting your own business rather than working in a job, eating a whole foods diet rather than following the typical food pyramid guidelines, listening to podcasts rather than listening to the radio in the car, reading books at night rather than watching TV. This is just the tip of the ice berg, there are so many areas in our life that we could be doing differently if we just stopped to think about what we are doing in the first place.
5. They know that their grass is the greenest
The fifth and final habit is that healthy people know that the grass isn’t greener on the other side, the grass is the greenest where you water it. Healthy people continue to work on their health, their relationships, their business and everything else in their lives because they know that it is only with effort will things truly happen.
