I’m so excited to bring you this interview with Tanya Winfield. She is the founder of Additive Free Pantry which is an informative site about how to reduce and remove the additives in your cooking. She has done some amazing work spreading her message around and Australia and the world. I highly recommend you read some of her stuff!
Q1. What motivated you start Additive Free Pantry?
This all just sorted of happened. I never wanted to run my own business though I
was always interested in having a real love for what I did for work. I worked in retail
and although I love fashion, I felt there was something more to my life purpose as
such. I was at a friends Enjo party when another great friend suggested I do
“Additive Parties”. This got me thinking and so Additive Free Pantry was born. I
started by visiting mums within their homes while their children played. I supplied
additive free morning tea for the mums and we chatted about what was in the pantry
and why you may want to choose a better option. I also stocked resources that
helped parents understand the additive free world. It was from doing pantry audits
that I created Additive Free Shopping Guide. I would be constantly telling the client
what brands to get and they ended up with a long scrawl of names and businesses
to shop at locally (not very professional).
It was my middle child, Kade that got me looking at what was in food as he was
diagnosed with asthma when he was 2.5 years old. I did not want him on a
preventative or puffa everyday. It all happen over time, small steps and many, many
hours of reading labels and books to be right here where I am today
Q2. What are some tips for parents to reduce the amount of additives in their
Wow, this question I could write a book on so I will try and keep it simple. Numbers
starting with 100’s are colours. Not many are free from known harmful reactions.
They cause hyperactivity, asthma, behavioural issues and rashes as an example.
Numbers starting with 200’s are all preservatives and are not recommended for
asthmatics, and are known to cause headaches, hyperactivity, rashes, migraine,
stomach upset, irritability and more.
Understanding MSG gets very confusing, so try and remove 621, 627, 635 and yeast
extract as these will all cause the same side effects as MSG. When in doubt reduce,
remove or replace.
Q3. What have you found to be the most motivating factor to tell parents/teachers to
remove additives from childrens’ foods?
When I talk to parents about food additives I find that many can connect with my
story. I am a mum wanting the best possible health for my children. Asthma for Kade
and behaviour for my youngest, Fletcher. Removing all of the harmful food additives
has made a HUGE difference to the kind of children I now raise. I do it because of
them. Mums get that and they see that I did it, so it is possible for ANYONE to do it
too…..they just have to make it a choice!
Q4. How do you spread your message to parents?
My business is online at www.additivefreepantry.com where there is a ton of free
recipes and blog posts to help parents along the way with an additive free journey.
Additive Free Pantry also has a Facebook page where like minded people can get
support and updates.
I also love doing live events around Australia. If one person from every live event I
do makes a change in their own home pantries, there is usually a ripple affect that
flows on. That one persons change may benefit one or more children. One less
child suffering from asthma, issues at school or poor concentration is just one more
reason that I love what I do……because our children are worth it!
