When I had my first child I was so particular with everything being spotless including him. I didnt want him eating things off the floor, playing in the dirt or touching anything at the shopping centre. After a while I became more relaxed and learnt that these things helped develop his immune system. This is what I told myself when I saw him with a mouthful of sand at the beach or eating a biscuit he dropped on the floor.
Over the last 2 years I have been researching more and more about eating healthy and what is in our foods. I was amazed when I read Changing Habits Changing Lives by Cyni O’Meara. It really opened my eyes as to how our foods are made and what is actually in them. I had a look on the back of the packet of one of my sons favourite treats and saw what was really in them. A popular chocolate biscuit had a list of ingredients the length of my arm and I could barely recognise any of them. Was this really food?? How could I be so worried that he was eating sand but turn around and feed him these factory foods??
While working as a Kindergarten teacher I then started looking at what children were eating. Fruit straps, muesli bars, a range of biscuits and rice snacks. These were all highly processed foods that barely resembled anything that might have grown from the ground. Worse still children actually thought the fruit strap they were eating was actual fruit! No wonder so many children found it hard to sit down, they were full of these chemicals and had hardly eaten anything nutritious to nourish them and give them energy.
All of this has motivated me to help teachers and parents implement healthy eating into their classrooms and homes to ensure our children are being fed properly. I hope you can help me change the way children eat and change their attitudes towards REAL food.
